A Valentine’s story with a happy ending….eventually
I just couldn’t let it pass. The ultimate VD (Valentine’s Day for the slower reader) story. Names have been changed just for the hell of it. I imagine they are all dead.
Once upon a time, far out in the country, near a very small town lived two happy couples.
Farming couples, neighbors for many years. Hard working, honest, and very close to each other. It was not uncommon for Betty Wallace, married name Cain and her husband Percy Cain to visit the farm of Ben Bush and his wife Barbara Wallace, married name Bush. Yes, they were sisters and neighbors. Many times, in emergency situations two of them would meet half way to exchange emergency messages, little bits and pieces of equipment they might need, or groceries if necessary. Well, as you can guess, Barbara Bush had opportunity to meet Percy Cain at the big oak tree half way between during one just such emergency.
And, as things go, the magnetic pull was just too much. Unbeknownst to Barbara and Percy (Bush and Cain), Ben and Betty had the same experience. (And why not, they were sisters after all. They would have the same tastes wouldn’t they?) Finally Barbara caved and told Ben about the affair, and how surprised could she have been when at the same time, he confessed his indiscretion. Being the sensible, practical people who are typical in rural Texas, they all sat down the following Sunday over a fried chicken dinner and came up with the perfect solution.
Off they went, to Mexico; got divorces and married the other’s spouse right then and there. Returning home, they went right back to the business of getting by at the Cain farm run by Percy and Barbara Cain and also at the Bush farm managed by Ben and Betty.
True story. They lived happy ever after, after that.
