Do you really believe we prefer it that way????
A new single parent family
O.K. Just to add to the confusion of an already confused society, a Wisconsin state senator has introduced a bill to teach that single parenting is a contributing factor to child abuse/neglect. Glenn Grothmam, age 57, thinks that “people” (I always wonder who these “people” are) are making fun of “old-fashioned families.” and says that “…children should only be raised by two married biological parents.”
You know, most of those women, myself included, would strongly prefer to have an “old-fashioned family”, but what happens if the other half just won’t cooperate? What happens when that father takes off or is abusive himself, or happens to be dead? Women (and men for that matter) can end up a single parent even after being married and having a baby. The scenarios are almost limitless. It especially concerns me that if a woman has no support from the father for whatever reason, it leaves adoption as the only “acceptable” choice to Mr. Grothmam and his supporters. So, we will penalize a woman who keeps her baby. How sad is that? I am not against adoption. I have two adopted cousins, and I am so glad that my aunt and uncle had that choice. They wanted children badly and are good parents, but not all women want to give up their children or need to give up their children for adoption.
This entire commentary can be reversed. There are men that are left with children, and they should not be penalized for being a single parent either.
All of this while Mr. Grotham has repeatedly supported policies that make pregnancy prevention more difficult, and in doing so advances, however inadvertently, more unwanted or unplanned pregnancies.
My one last comment – Mr. Grothmam has never been married, never had children, and as all of you parents out their know it is impossible to imagine that situation. It’s one of those, “just have to be there” situations.
I don’t have the answers, it just appears to be a personal, family issue to me.
